Lucian C. ChenPartner
Lucian is the co-chair of the firm’s IP department, where he practices a broad range of commercial and intellectual property law spanning multiple technology areas, with an emphasis on complex high tech, pharmaceutical and biotechnology patent and trademark litigation, IP transactions, due diligence and contract negotiations.
He has two decades of experience representing clients in multibillion-dollar patent and trademark litigation cases involving products as varied as computer software, antifungals, antibiotics, personal electronics, and cholinesterase inhibitors. His extensive involvement in all aspects of IP litigation spans counseling clients and initiating litigation, through to both bench and jury trials, including numerous Hatch-Waxman cases. Lucian also has significant experience in preparing pre-suit investigations, non-infringement opinions, licensing and settlement agreements and intellectual property due diligence. In addition, he counsels clients regarding trademark and copyright disputes, and prepares and prosecutes patent, trademark, design patent and copyright applications. He also represents scientists and professors before institutional boards, in administrative hearings and in litigation. Prior to becoming an attorney, Lucian was Founding Editor-in-Chief of BioProcessing, a peer-reviewed journal focusing on the industrial biotechnology industry. His long journalism career includes experience as Associate Managing Editor of Genetic Engineering News, the leading trade publication of the biotechnology field, as well as Managing Director and Editor for a group of science websites in the VerticalNet e-commerce family. He remains on the board of the journal Biotechnology Law Report, for which he also served as Editor-in Chief.
